MTX JackHammer: The World's Largest Car Audio Subwoofer | MTX Audio

MTX JackHammer

It's Good to Be King. The world's most outrageous car audio subwoofer — and it actually works.

Some products exist to be purchased. The MTX JackHammer exists to make a statement. It is a 24-inch, 4,000-watt RMS subwoofer that weighs over 400 pounds, stands over three feet tall, and requires a 56.25-pound magnet structure just to get moving. It has been featured on MythBusters and Pimp My Ride. It has been called overkill. It has been called impossible. MTX built it anyway — because the only thing better than the best is knowing you have it.

"Lloyd wanted to make a statement. He wanted to try to get thrown out of CES or get a sound ordinance ticket or something just to prove that this was a real driver."

The Story Behind the JackHammer

In 2005, MTX introduced the JackHammer, the world's largest production car subwoofer. MTX had built and released it and caught some criticism from the car audio industry. People claimed it was just a prop, that it didn't actually function as a subwoofer. Lloyd Ivy, MTX's founder, didn't argue. He commissioned a build to prove them wrong: a 2002 Cadillac Escalade fitted with the JackHammer that went on to appear on MythBusters and Pimp My Ride, cementing the JackHammer's place in car audio history.

Engineering the Impossible

The JackHammer is not just big. It is engineered to perform at its size. The sand cast aluminum basket and 56.25-pound magnet structure give it the rigid, precisely manufactured foundation needed to control a 24-inch cone at high excursion. The 6.5-inch high-temperature voice coil uses 17 AWG aluminum wiring to handle 4,000 watts continuously while achieving 2.5 inches of one-way Xmax.

An aluminum shorting ring and progressive roll spider reduce distortion at high output levels, allowing the JackHammer to play loud and clean simultaneously. The carbon and glass fiber dust cap delivers an excellent stiffness-to-weight ratio that increases sensitivity so the driver can achieve high SPL without being pushed to its limits at moderate power levels.

The patented surround design is one of the JackHammer's defining engineering achievements. It increases Xmax and enables the driver to move more air than any other subwoofer in production. The 8 AWG set screw terminals on both voice inputs ensure that even the heaviest gauge power wire can be used to deliver every watt your amplifier can produce.

Plan accordingly The JackHammer weighs over 400 pounds. Most vehicles will require suspension upgrades to handle the added weight, and the electrical system will need serious attention, at minimum a Big 3 upgrade and a high-output alternator. A 5.47 cubic foot sealed enclosure is also not a small box. This is a project, not a plug-and-play install.

The Original 22" JackHammer

MTX also produced the T9922-22, a 22-inch, 369-pound JackHammer SuperWoofer. The 22" is no longer available for purchase, but it deserves its place in the record books.

The T9922-22 shared the same core philosophy as its successor: sand cast aluminum basket, 56.25-pound magnet structure, 6.5-inch high-temperature voice coil with 17 AWG aluminum wiring, and 4,000 watts RMS power handling with 2.5 inches of Xmax. Where it differed was in cone construction: the 22" used an expanded polypropylene cone with mica filler for reduced mass and increased stiffness, and featured FEA-designed progressive roll spider with 10 AWG integrated tinsel leads woven in. It also incorporated an integrated aluminum heatsink to maintain optimum voice coil temperature under extreme power loads.

At 23 inches tall and 369 pounds, it was slightly lighter than the 24" version but no less outrageous. The 22" required a 20.25-inch cutout diameter, a 4.2 cubic foot sealed enclosure, and, as with the 24", serious planning around suspension and electrical upgrades before installation.
